Licensing FAQs
How long does it usually take to get a "Provisional License"?
Provided that all documentation is complete and the premises meet basic ventilation and hygiene requirements, it takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks from application submission to the issuance of a provisional license. This allows you to legally commence business operations as early as possible.
What are the fire safety requirements for a restaurant license application?
Fire safety requirements vary depending on the license type and the size of the premises. Generally, they include the installation of certified fire extinguishers, fire blankets, emergency lighting, and exit signs. For larger kitchens or those using open flames, fire sprinkler systems and fire-rated doors may also be required. Our engineering team provides a one-stop service, handling all fire safety drawings and installations for you.
Can I still apply for a license if there are unauthorized building works (illegal structures)?
The Buildings Department enforces very strict requirements. Applications will generally be rejected if severe unauthorized building works (UBWs), such as extended exterior walls or illegal cocklofts, exist on the plans. We provide preliminary inspections before you sign a lease and assist in formulating compliant modification or reinstatement plans.
If I take over an existing restaurant, can the license be transferred directly to my name?
Yes, it can. If the previous licensee agrees to sign a "Consent to Transfer," and there have been no major alterations to the internal layout, kitchen configuration, or ventilation system, we can assist you with the license transfer procedure. This process is significantly faster than applying for a new license from scratch.
